Occupational Therapy

Driver Assessment

Comprehensive on- and off-road assessments for medical, age-related and rehabilitation needs.

Overview

Our Occupational Therapy Driver Assessment is a thorough, two-part evaluation that determines whether a person can safely return to, or continue, driving. It is the gold-standard assessment used by GPs, specialists, insurers and licensing authorities across Australia.

We combine a clinic-based off-road screen with a practical on-road drive alongside a qualified driving instructor in a dual-controlled vehicle. The result is an evidence-based recommendation about licensing, vehicle modifications and any rehabilitation that may help.

Driving is often central to independence, work and community life. Our role is to give clients, families and referrers a clear, fair answer, and where possible, a pathway back behind the wheel.

Who it's for

  • Older drivers referred for a medical review
  • People returning to driving after a stroke, brain injury or major surgery
  • Drivers managing neurological conditions (e.g. MS, Parkinson's, dementia)
  • People with physical disabilities who may need vehicle modifications
  • Learner drivers with a disability or medical condition
  • Anyone asked by their GP, specialist or licensing authority to complete an assessment

Frequently asked questions

How long does the whole assessment take?
Around 2.5 to 3 hours in total, usually split across one appointment. We can break it into two visits if that's easier.
Do I need a referral?
Yes, we need a referral from your GP, specialist or licensing authority so we have the relevant medical background.
How much does it cost?
Fees depend on funding (NDIS, insurer, self-funded) and whether vehicle modifications are involved. We provide a written quote before booking.
What happens if I don't pass?
We always discuss the outcome with you first. Where possible we recommend lessons, modifications or a conditional licence rather than ceasing driving outright.
Can I use my own car?
The on-road assessment is conducted in a dual-controlled vehicle for safety. If vehicle modifications are being trialled, we may also assess in your own car.
